Javier Luengo, part of the Peñín Guide tasting committee, stopped by DO Conca de Barberà Headquarters last Thursday to taste 50 wines from our DO. His tasting notes will published in the 2020 edition of the Peñín Guide (Guía Peñín).
Since its inception, the Peñín Guide has become Spain’s leading wine guide. The upcoming 2020 edition marks the publication’s 30th anniversary.
Mr. Luengo knows our region well from his previous tasting visits for the Guide. He commented particularly on the recent work of DO Conca de Barberà wineries:
“They are on a very interesting trajectory,” he notes, “especially with the wines they’re making from Trepat.”
He also commented on market trends, pointing out that DO Conca de Barberà wineries are already producing what is in demand: “Moderate alcohol wines that are fruity and refreshing.”
He noted that, above all, Conca de Barberà wineries shouldn’t stray from this trajectory, even if the market changes: “Winemakers shouldn’t abandon their established identity but rather, know how to maintain it.” Peñín Guide 2020 will be published at the end of this year.
