History of Milmanda
The Milmanda Castle is in the Poblet valley, in the Francolí basin. There exists written documents that show evidence the existence of a roman settlement in this area with the name of Escupinada.
This castle is found in what is called the New Catalonia, a land that was re-conquested from the Arabs by the counts of Barcelona. During that time, it formed part of a web of castled established to provide safety for Christians that were colonising the re-conquested lands.
This re-conquest ended when Ramón Berenguer IV el Santo conquested Tortosa, the capitol of the Moslem kingdom. New Catalonia then became a safe land. In 1153, Ramón Berenguer IV gave the lands of Poblet to the Fontfreda abbey (situated in Les Corberes, in the south of France). Monks of this abbey transferred to Poblet and founded today’s monastery. During some time, they lived together in the same lands of the Poblet abbey and Milmanda, until 1774 when the Milmanda castle went on to belong to the monastery. It was no longer the feudal castle and it became an agricultural production farm. It was then when vines and cereals were planted and today’s estate was constructed.
In the XIV Century the castle was reformed by the Poblet abbey, Ponç de Cupons, but in the XIX Century all the church’s properties we auctioned, together with the disentailment of Mendizábal. Someone bought Milmanda and worked the lands, but the castle was abandoned. On January 5th, 1979, the Torres family bought the castle and the estate. |
