History

Towards the end of the XIX Century, the birth of the Catalonian agricultural co-operatives in Conca de Barberà occurred impelled by the men of these lands after the crisis of the phylloxera plague that destroyed the vineyards. The product of this movement was the construction of numerous co-operative wineries.

The co-operative winery of l'Espluga de Francolí was constructed in 1913, under the direction of the architect Pere Domènech i Roura, son of Luis Domènech i Muntaner. It was made with the purest architectural style of the time and it was one of the first modernist wineries of Catalonia. Because of its monumentalism it is known as the “wine cathedral” of excellence, description attributed by Angel Guimerà during his stay in l'Espluga de Francolí in 1921.

Today, we elaborate wine, cava and oils with the name of Francolí and also generous wines, mistela (a type of sweet wine), rancid and moscatel (a sweet wine made with 100% moscatel grapes).

Among its modern wine-making installations we have the Wine Museum dedicated to the history of the vineyard of Conca de Barberà, its cultivation, wine elaboration and the modernist building as well.

Three audio-visual projects dedicated to the elaboration of wine, the birth of co-operatives and modernism complete the tour of three levels (winepress, vessels and on top of the tubs) didactically thought for a wide array of visitors.
