History

The Barberà de la Conca Agricultural Co-operative, S.C.C.L. inherited and continued the work of two entities that already existed before the Civil War: the Agricultural Society of Barberà and the Agricultural Union of Barberà. Both fused in 1934 because of the new co-operatives Law. From this fusion we inherited, from he first, the honour of being the first co-operative winery of Catalonia (founded in 1894); from the second, the magnificent modernist winery designed by the architect César Martinell. Both entities continue to be unified since the end of the Civil War and have functioned like one co-operative since then.

Among the multiple services that are presented to the members we must emphasise the elaboration and sale of wine that comes from the harvest of the members, considered one of the main activities of the co-operative.

In 1981, jointly with other co-operatives of the region, and in 1983, individually, the elaboration of cava started under the name Castell de la Comanda.

In 1994, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Co-operative, the Cabanal wine was launched in the market, with white and rose varieties.
