History

The Abadía de Poblet winery is born from the desire of the Monastery to recover the vine growing tradition in its land. A millennial tradition, typical of the Cister Order, initiated in Borgoña and always linked to only one grape variety: Pinot noir. It is a delicate and difficult variety, that originates very soft and elegant wines, unique in their refinement and separate from any other known red wine for its style. On the other hand, it is an unusual variety in our country.

It all started in the 80's, when Codorniu agreed with the community of Monacal de Poblet on the future cultivation of its vineyard and, with this, started a long remodelling of the intramural space, finishing with the process of planting the Pinot noir, the main protagonist variety in the stellar Cistercian vine growing trajectory. In the year 2000, with an adult vineyard, the winery, that since then elaborates the Pago del Poblet wine, is constructed near the monastery. This winery maintains the different elements of the initial construction of the XIX Century intact, Catalonian vaults and arches, as well as the main entrance and gothic windows in the façade, that come from an old abbatial building from the XV Century.

Poblet has a series of geological and climate conditions that make it an extraordinary terrain for vine growing. To its deep and rocky soils, predominantly slate, we can add an abnormally fresh climate in the regional context, motivated by height – more than 500 meters – and the Northern orientation of its slopes, as well as the influence of a summer marine breeze. These circumstances, specially favourable for Pinot noir, assure a slow ripening and in optimum conditions of the grape.
