[Més informació]

Large parts of the wine produced in Conca de Barberà are white wines and rosés aimed at making cava-denominated sparkling wines. However, the region offers ideal conditions for producing some excellent non-sparkling wines, especially red wines. Winegrowers and winemakers are well aware of this potential and are joining efforts in order to produce high-quality wines. The volume of wines which are eventually bottled with the Designation of Origin of Conca de Barberà is gradually increasing.

The grape varieties traditionally used in the production of white wine are Macabeo and Parellada. These grapes deliver wines of a bright, pale yellow colour, which are light and have a fine fruity bouquet and moderate alcohol content. Chardonnay is a recently introduced variety which lends itself to being blended with the former two varieties in order to add body and consistency. Alternatively, it can be used for producing a monovarietal wine using state-of-the-art fermentation techniques and/or an ageing process in oak barrels in order to create some well-known and prestigious wines.

The most characteristic rosé wine carrying the Designation of Origin is made of the black Trepat grape, a grape variety which is native to the Conca de Barberà. It delivers an outstanding, light, fresh and fruity wine, which is raspberry pink in colour, clear and bright.

Red wines are traditionally made of Tempranillo and Grenache grapes, but foreign varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Shiraz have adapted perfectly to the climate and soils of Conca de Barberà and are delivering very good results. Some national varieties such as Carignan or Mourvèdre are still preferred. The young red wines are smooth and light, and flavoursome on the palate. Those which are aged in oak barrels are full-bodied, acquire a great aromatic complexity, and are persistent on the palate.
